I would agree that 140,000 miles is a good time to have it changed. The diesel engine in your Mini is an interference engine, meaning that if your auxiliary belt breaks as a result of wear, the pistons will hit the valves and destroy your engine. I would strongly advise you to have it replaced as per the recommendation you have been given.
